Requirements

  • Must be 21 years old at the start of the academy.
  • Must have one of the following
    • Have a minimum of 60 college credits in any field of study or
    • currently serving on active duty with 90 or more days of service, or a veteran with honorable discharge, or
    • active member of the National Guard or Reserve with two (2) or more years in good standing with the commander’s endorsement.
      * If you do not meet one of these requirements and are still interested, contact a member of the personnel selection unit. 
  • Have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License at the time of hire.
  • Ability to acquire a Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm.
  • No prior felony convictions.
  • Must not smoke tobacco products.

Application Process

  • Apply online via the Barnstable Police Officer Application tab.
  • You will be contacted once a hiring process begins and if you are eligible.
  • Attend an eligibility interview with Barnstable Police Personnel.
  • Attend an Orientation.
  • Attend an Intake Interview.
  • Attend a Physical Fitness Test based on the 30th percentile of the Cooper Standard Test. Click the link for the Cooper Standards
  • Background Investigation conducted.
  • Panel Interview
  • Candidate who complete the above steps and pass all aspects of the hiring process may receive a conditional offer of employment.
  • Following a conditional offer of employment, the candidate will be expected to take and pass a medical exam, psychological exam, Physical Abilities Test (PAT), and a Cooper Standard Test for entrance into the academy. Click the link to access the PAT Instructional Video

Academy Life

Academy Recruits will attend either the Cape Cod Municipal Academy (Falmouth) or the Plymouth Municipal Police Academy for approximately twenty-one (21) weeks.

  • Day one (What to expect) – Expect a high-stress environment on the first day of the academy. This is the point at which Academy Staff begins to test Police Recruits’ ability to handle the tensest of situations.
  • Classroom – Criminal & Procedural Law will be taught, in addition to numerous other topics that will assist you in conquering the situations Officers will find themselves dealing with once answering calls for service.
  • Applied Patrol Procedures (Scenario-based Training) – Recruits will undergo numerous scenario-based situations relevant to actual calls for service.
  • Drill & Ceremony – You are joining a paramilitary career field when becoming a Police Officer. Drill and ceremony are essential for teaching teamwork, discipline, and physical coordination.
  • Physical Training – Recruits will go through a rigorous physical training regimen throughout the academy to include cardiovascular and strength training.
  • Graduation – A day to celebrate with your academy mates and family for successfully making it through the training.

Patrol Officer Work Schedule

After completing the probationary period, Patrol Officers will bid their shift on a seniority basis. Barnstable Patrol officers work a 4-day on and a 2-day off rotation.  The shift bidding process takes place every four months.  The shifts are as follows:  Midnight Shift 2345 – 0745 hours, Day Shift 0745 – 1545 hours, and Evening Shift  1545 – 2345 hours.  Up to three Officers per shift are permitted to work a 3 on 3 off permanent shift swap on a seniority basis.

The Barnstable Police Department currently employs 120 sworn officers, with approximately 14 civilian employees and 14 civilian dispatchers. It is the largest police department on Cape Cod. The Department serves the Town of Barnstable which covers 76.3 miles including the villages of Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable.
